Sparks Magazine

Writer: Andy Cabezas

As part of the Sparks Magazine team, I contributed to quarterly issues focused on topics and themes regarding the local APIDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American) community.

Explore more on my roles throughout my time with Sparks.

My first Sparks article, “Weighing on My Mind,” was featured as the center spread and cover article for Issue 19.

  • As contributing writer for issues 19 and 20, I ideated, pitched, and wrote articles for Sparks' quarterly publication.

    • "Weighing on my Mind: The Fetishization of Asian-Americans and Body Image" is an in-depth analysis on the effects of media fetishization on Asian-American self-perception.

    • "Home is Where The (Vegan) Food Is" is a local story and review of a vegan immigrant-owned business.

  • As Co-Editor, I worked with the writing team to provide feedback and edits corresponding to AP style guidelines on draft articles.

I also co-hosted writing style workshops with the editing team in order to provide new members with necessary resources and skills for writing.

  • As Editor in chief, I managed the Sparks Magazine team and oversaw the publication process. I prepared promotional materials to garner new editorial members, held informative workshops on creative disciplines (design, writing, etc), and organized biweekly meetings for the greater team.
